Following their acquisition of Clyde Petroleum Exploratie BV in the
Netherlands, Wintershall Noordzee needs to include the additional seismic and
well log data in their corporate database, and they have awarded two contracts
to DPTS to perform these services.
For the seismic data DPTS will be analysing the existing database and
other listings, and working with Wintershall to define priorities for
transcription and identify any datasets which should not be transcribed. Field and processed seismic tapes will then
be transcribed to high capacity media, an index produced of the data
transcribed, and associated paper data scanned to PDF files.
It is estimated that 52,000 tapes and cartridges acquired over the past
40 years will be transcribed in this project.
For the well log project various activities will be performed by
DPTS. These include identifying and
eliminating duplicate tapes, transcribing the remaining tapes to high capacity
media (including recovery of data from problem tapes), and producing a detailed
index of the contents of each tape.
Hardcopy well reports and logs will be scanned, numerical data extracted
from the scanned documents via OCR, and the digital data overlaid on the
scanned images of logs.
Where digital data does not exist DPTS will digitise the hardcopy
logs. Selected curves will be
composited, and all data will be delivered in a format suitable for loading to
an OpenWorks database.
It is estimated that 3,600 tapes and cartridges will be transcribed and
composite curve data produced for 500 wells.
For both projects a back-up security copy of the output media will be
produced and the original input media destroyed in an environmentally friendly
way.
Folke Smulders, Deputy Exploration Manager of Wintershall Noordzee
commented “we decided to award these contracts to DPTS because of the good
experience we had with the same type of project a few years ago. We also think that DPTS are one of the
frontrunners in retrieving a “nearly lost tape” and they provide a good price
and quality service”.
